Andrea Reusing is the chef-owner of Lantern [Chapel Hill]. Her goal is to present simple, authentic Asian food using seasonal and local ingredients. The striking dining room and bar were designed by N.C. native (and current NYC resident) David Doernberg, an old friend and designer working in the film industry. Lantern opened January, 2002
We go there twice a year, DH’s birthday and mine. Maybe a third time for something really special. Their menu is an offering of tastes you have never had before.
My entrée was steamed, wild, black cod with roasted shiitake mushrooms, baby bok choy and black rice served with a beurre blanc sauce .My first taste of black rice (not wild, BLACK), looking more like flax the grains have the hull intact and are wonderfully nutritious. DH had his usual a crispy flounder, then we shared the local plum-sake sorbet with a black sesame fortune cookie.
Recently Chapel Hill Magazine ruined our secret in their recent annual food issue. Of the 10 food experiences in CH recommended The Lantern was #2.

Number 2: Cocktails and DIY sushi at the Lantern bar
Everybody knows that Lantern is one of the hottest restaurants in the area (just consult any issue of Food & Wine, the mag that can’t seem to stop bragging about the place). But in my opinion, one way to get the most bang for your buck is to skip the restaurant and have appetizers and cocktails at the bar. In a detached bungalow behind the restaurant itself, the little lacquered jewel box of a space only seats a handful of people, so come early. Sip a Junebug (Pimm’s, fresh ginger, lemon soda, cucumber), and order one of Lantern’s famed roll-your-own sushi bento boxes, a nifty kit filled with nori (seaweed sheets), tea-cured salmon or trout and a variety of house-pickled Japanese vegetables.

Do not tell anyone about this bar – that’s our secret hangout.
There was just one problem with dinner. We have been eating raw, salads, fiber, healthy foods for so long the butter-sauce with the mushrooms and then the sorbet with a cookie were more than I could handle. Did not sleep much, have felt nauseous, took a sleeping pill, felt worse, went back to bed later this morning and skipped the gym.
Great dinner but this is the day my body pays me back for overfeeding it.
