The OLLI/New Horizons Swing Band, of which hubby is a saxophone player, had a gig last night at a retirement village in Durham. Because photographs of the band in action are needed for publicity (and are hard to come by), I tagged along as photo clicker. The rest was unexpected.
Not only was the band booked, but three male dance instructors from Fred Astaire were booked, namely our teacher Tori and two companions. "Just like a cruise ship," one of the residents said and then took to the floor. For nearly two hours (with a ten minute break) the band played and the residents danced everything from Misty to Boogie Woogie.
But the surprise was yet to be. Peter diFalco, a choreographer and dancer himself, now retired and teaching about the Triangle, has just moved to into the village with his wife. Peter taught did a short dance lesson on Salsa between band sets. We first met Peter a few years back at the UNC's Carolina Club when he tried to teach us Tango. He remembered me and asked me to dance a swing number when the band resumed playing.
Late last night I "Googled" Peter diFalco and found a resume that is second only to Gene Kelly. He is in fact a famous dancer and he danced with me! Hubby was blowing the boogie and told me later that he couldn't watch me and play at the same time.
The leader of the village culture group, namely Jackie, had been in the OLLI Couples Ballroom for Spring term last April/May and began organizing the holiday dance soon after. The total photo count was 144, all but a couple use able and I have already begun to edit and create some photo-collage pages. The next one in the making will be for the village with candid shots of the couples dancing the night away. What a lovely evening to remember (and I only got ONE dance).
Made it to the gym at 9:30 am this morning. Did the sweat-thing and then came home to crash. Ah! Monday morning yoga - I need it soon. bb
