IF your ‘RealPlayer’ works better than mine, you can watch live band & dancers in the Fetzer Gym.. After much configuration by my I.T. department (hubby), I still get scattered pixels. But...I did go to the gym and watched amazing things.
First surprise, everything was quiet upon arrival. I had expected a blast of music and lots of screaming students. Turns out the marathon rules allow for periodic breaks. Once band had just left and the "Masonboro Boys" were setting up to start the next period. Rock ‘n Roll still lives or at least it did on Saturday afternoon. I’m not an expert on band quality but over-the-top loudness must qualify for something.
And of course costumes play a role. Not the band, the dancers. Some wore the bobbing ‘bee’ headbands from SNL and some wore twinkling earrings and Nikes. One group of girls, all in green wigs and green tights (?), wearing black tops were seen carrying bouquets of flowers (fake & yellow), but I have no clue as to what/who they might have been. Lots of yellow Post-It stars, the symbol for the central committee, could be seen on random dancers (couples and singles). Sweat shirts with multiple school logos were seen about.
The electricity Friday night must have been ‘mega,’ even as the excitement level pretty much matched the noise level Saturday afternoon. To be sure I arrived just after noon on Saturday, where I am sure if I had been there at midnight Friday night things would have been much different and louder. Still, with over 1100 students participating from 7 p.m. Friday, about 600 were still going at noon. What remains by 7 p.m. Saturday will be anyone’s guess. Each participating must guarantee at least $100 of sponsorship for the marathon.
Could not get a "For the Kids" fund total at the time but was told that the highest amount of sponsorship for any single student had already exceeded $3,000. Good Show! Complete totals should be posted early next week: http://www.uncmarathon.org/
The walk to and from the Fetzer Gym on such a fine day encouraged me to stop by the Ram’s Head bookstore.
Question: what do you call a Puerto Rican who lives in New York?
Answer: A Nuyorican.
I’m serious, I bought the Rough Guide to Puerto Rican Salsa CD and that’s the term used!
A bit of browsing found the Oprah selection "A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose" by Eckhart Tolle. That’s my read for the next couple of weeks. On the return walk home I could see redbud trees coming into full bloom and the very first of the azaleas coming out.
Spring is coming.
