SUMMER SOLSTICE at MIDNIGHT

The summer solstice is tonight and to celebrate the season I made Farmer Salad. What’s that you ask? Go to the Farmer’s Market or any produce section at the grocery and get all the fresh vegetables you like. Chop, slice and dice all raw vegetables and mix with tofu (or hard boiled eggs) and serve.

The picture is tonight’s base salad. Beginning in the bottom of a large bowl layer: shredded napa cabbage, green onions, parsley, green and yellow zucchini, carrots, fennel, cucumber (peeled and seeded), red onion, kernel corn, green peas, and cherry tomatoes, halved on top. OK, I cheated and used frozen corn and peas because I always keep those in the freezer.

All this is chilling in a bin of ice as I write but come dinner time I will add diced, firm tofu cubes and dressing to suit. Mine preference for dressing is a simple but tangy vinaigrette while DH will likely pour on creamy Caesar dressing with grated Romano cheese. Whatever.

We needed a vegetarian dinner for the week and what better time than to collect some of North Carolina’s finest in the peak of the season. Next taste in mind for the coming weekend...icy watermelon. What's a summer without watermelon?

As for other works in process....no sooner had I handed off "Ragtime Dreams" to Jan, the long-arm quilter, than my textile agenda changed in a flash. Intending to work the list, including the scrappy jacket begun ages ago, something else popped up. Bonnie Hunter is due in the Triangle for a workshop(s) on July 19-20 and issued the supply list a few days ago. Sorting though the stash pulling out scraps and “crumbs” for the workshop (called Crumbs & Piecing), I realized there were a number of forgotten goodies that would fit the scrappy jacket.

As of today I have the back finished (or almost done) and have been working on tiny patchwork for the sleeves. That was until I pulled out some baggies that where long meshed in the bottom of a bin and found a long string of 4-patch green and white....obviously intended for a checkerboard that was never finished. Last night I began to stitch them together to string out a 2-row check and am thinking about the sleeves. Would not the checked-border work for the sleeve hem? Here we go again...this jacket will remain parts and pieces until my mind settles on the right mix of color and piecing.

This entry will be short as I did a full weight workout this morning, including more leg-lowering, ab stretching than usual and for that reason my upper spine is begging me to lie down. Dinner’s done and the rest of the day is for, well rest.
